Liu Kung Tau is a small island located on the northeastern edge of the Shandong Peninsula. The British leased it from China along with the rest of Wei Hai Wei, a total area of 285 square miles, in May 1898. The least lasted until 1 October, 1930 when control of the port was returned to the Chinese. Because Wei Hai Wei was a colony, it was open longer than the rest of the Treaty Ports and operated differently.
