Shanghai

Shanghai is located on the southern estuary of the Yangtze river and is currently the most populous city in China. The Shanghai Treaty Port was one of the original 5 Treaty Ports that opened as a result of the Treaty of Nanking in 1842. It became the dominant location for trade and business in China because of its favorable port location during this period.

China maintained control of the city at the time, but Britain, France, and the United States all had settlements surrounding the city. In 1854, the Shanghai Municipal Council was formed to manage these settlements, and quickly took control over the city’s businesses and trade.

Map of Shanghai in 1882, the British Concession is colored in blue.
